20 Questions with Connie Peters:
MEO of Modern Mama

Connie Peters just wanted to get Moms out of the house again and so was born Modern Mama, a group for MOMs to reconnect on an adult level in Edmonton! "Moms spend so much time second-guessing themselves as Mothers, wishing they had more mom-friends, and feeling isolated at home on maternity leave. Let’s get out and enjoy being women, but stay attached to our babies!" Connie has three girls, aged 1, 4 and 6 and is a WAHM when she's not 'carting them around town to school, gymnastics and playdates!)'

My business ROCKS because ... We offer stuff moms really want to do. So many mom-things are really for the kids, not the moms. I don't want to spend each day taking my kids to the park, playgroups and the zoo - it's great in moderation, but what about me, the woman? I love to learn about fashion and beauty and find a moment to get a manicure or my hair done too. It can't ALL be about the kids!
I ORGANIZE my day by ... I try to fit work in wherever I can, so that includes during breakfast, naptime, movie/tv time, and 8-10pm. It's not organized per say, but it works for me.
When I am FEELING DOWN I …
Pour a glass of wine and pick up a fashion magazine
When I LOOK BACK , I see my biggest success was ... starting Modern Mama as a passion.
I am not comfortable in the art of SELF-PROMOTION.
I'm getting better at it, you have to be to run your own business. I think it's getting past the thought of boasting about yourself, to realizing you're trying to share information and help people, so go ahead and talk about it.
What is NOT PERFECT in my life is ... everything! Nothing is perfect! I wish I had more time in each day, more money, more experience, the know-how to do everything …
BALANCE is ...well, a wise woman (ahhem, the publisher of this magazine) once told me that 'balance is bullshit' and I'd have to agree! I can't seem to figure it out, so it must be myth - It simply doesn't exist for me. I always feel like I'm failing someone - not enough time for the girls, too much time online, ignoring my hubby, my household, and the list goes on.

My SUCCESS WORDS are ... inspire and be inspired.

My SUPER POWER is ….
Multitasking ….
Email, cook dinner, unload the dishwasher and tweet at the same time (that's not counting entertaining my three girls at the same time).

What SEPERATES ME from other MEOs is ... I think I keep it pretty real, what works what doesn't - I'm open and honest when it comes to business and parenting advice when asked.
I am an EXPERT in my field because ... I would like to think I know what moms want. The stuff we do with Modern Mama, and now with Urban Infant is what years of chatting with moms at mommy groups, playgroups, playdates, grade school, summer camps, preschools, and of course girlfriend chats, have taught me.
THREE WORDS to describe me are ... creative, savvy, shopaholicwinelover
The most INFLUENTIAL person in my life is … My husband because he's super supportive and always encourages me to go after whatever I want. He's very driven and authentic, things I admire and strive to be as well.
My ULTIMATE marketing success has been ... word of mouth between moms. Moms depend on one another for the real deal, the true goods on what works and what doesn't in motherhood. So if a mom tells another mom about Modern Mama, that's the ultimate marketing success.
The LAST THING on my priority list is ... home organization and the stack of un-filed bills on my desk

My 5 tips for feeling BEAUTIFUL are:

  • Always make an effort to look good,
  • Wear mascara and blush every day (more if time) and a dab of lip gloss while driving,
  • A good pair of jeans can take me anywhere,
  • Read a fashion magazine (People StyleWatch is the BEST) at least one a month
  • And positive affirmations when I look in the mirror
BEFORE I was a wife/mom, I ... was a software engineer. I traveled, installed software at client sites throughout the US. I trained those clients and provided tech support. After I had my girls, I got creative and realized I didn't want to climb the corporate ladder anymore, worry about some glass ceiling or work 9-5. It took a couple years (I worked after my first two girls) but I finally quit to stay home, and that is when Modern Mama was born.
I OVERCOME challenges by ....
trying not to react immediately and thinking through things for at least a couple of minutes. I tend to jump to act too fast.
As I look into 2010, I see for MYSELF ... The ultimate balancing act between trying to be a present and authentic mom to my girls and yet a creative force growing Modern Mama in Edmonton and Calgary. I use SOCIAL MEDIA because ...
it is the perfect way to connect with new moms, my target market. Moms love to hang out online, especially Facebook. I'm inspired every day by the fellow business moms I meet on Twitter too!
