Things I learned
from the UnBook
I
love twitter. Twitter
is where I first met
my online version of
Elvis, Scott
Stratten
aka @unmarketing
(yes, I actually stalk
him a little bit and
squeal like a 12-year-old
Bieber fan whenever
he responds to a tweet.
I think if I ever met
him, I might just go,
"Eeeeeeeeeh! OMG
I love you, Scott!!!!").
|
When
I
was
a
mere
twitter
virgin,
I
begged
for
help
from
ANYONE
who
could
make
me
not
want
to
punch
twitter
in
the
nuts
because,
you
see,
when
you
first
try
twitter,
it's
frustrating.
And
awkward.
Kinda
like
your
first
time
having
sex:
nothing
seems
to
fit,
you
feel
embarrassed
because
you
don't
really
know
what
you're
doing,
and
you
wonder
WHY
exactly
you're
doing
it
in
the
first
place.
Yes,
yes
I
can
equate
anything
to
sex,
it's
a
gift.
Don't
judge.
Ahem.
So,
you
see,
when
I
needed
an
experienced
person
to
guide
me
through
my
first
time
on
twitter
(I
really
did
stare
at
the
screen
blankly,
feeling
a
bit
like
Big
Daddy
might
if
he
were
staring
at
a
sink
full
of
dirty
dishes:
Not
a
fucking
clue
how
to
start),
Scott
was
the
first
twit
who
had
me
at
"Hello."
It
was
like
some
gift
from
the
Twitter
Gods:
@unmarketing
answered
my
potty-mouthed
pleas
for
help.
Don't
ask
the
exact
tweet
was
but
I
remember
it
being
something
like
this:
 |
@MOMmagRocks:
SunuvaBITCHballs
can
someone
PLEASE
tell
me
how
to
shrink
a
gawddamn
url!?
And
wtf
is
a
#
for???
@unmarketing
Download
tweetdeck.
It
automatically
shrinks
the
url
for
you.
Let
me
know
if
I
can
help
with
anything
else |
 |
|
What's
this,
I
thought.
Tweetdeck?
And
someone
who
is
offering
advice
to
a
profane
twit?
So
began
my
love
affair
with
@unmarketing.
Over
the
last
year
and
half
that
I've
been
on
twitter,
I've
seen
him
talk
other
newbies
off
the
proverbial
ledge
and
offer
advice
in
140
characters
or
less.
Scott's
ability
to
make
Twitter
seem
less
complicated
and
more
fun
has
given
him
some
sort
of
groupie
following,
myself
included.
OK,
maybe
I
started
the
damn
group
but
he
has
this
geeky,
cool
quality
about
him
that
makes
him
approachable.
He
actually
TALKS
to
you
on
twitter
(for
the
most
part,
I
mean
the
guy
has
almost
70,000
sheep,
er,
I
mean
followers)
so
it's
like
some
kind
of
celebrity
taking
the
time
out
of
his
day
to
answer
your
questions.
Now,
people
who
actually
know
Scott,
IRL
(in
real
life
for
all
of
you
twitter
newbies),
must
think
I'm
a
dork
for
being
all
#OMGitsUNMARKETING
#wooooooHOOOOO
#iloveyouScott
In
fact,
when
Kathy
Buckworth
was
in
Edmonton
for
her
book
launch
of
Shut
Up
&
Eat,
she
told
me
about
being
in
Disneyland
for
a
SM
(Social
Media)
thingy
(I
was
drinking
wine
and
my
eyes
started
to
glaze
over)
with
Scott
and
his
kid
UnJr.
She
said
it
was
funny
how
people
would
react
to
seeing
Scott
while
her
own
reaction
was,
"It's
just
Scott!"
LOL
(laugh
out
loud),
I
mean
I
know
he's
just
a
doode
with
some
Twitter
smarts
but
THEN!
THEN
he
announces
a
book
launch
for
the
UnBook!
Hence
the
reason
for
this
long-winded,
albeit
somewhat
amusing
(right??)
intro
for
my
own
review.
You
see,
in
an
effort
to
look
all
cool
and
shit,
I
asked
Scott,
"So
where
do
us
media
types
get
a
copy
for
your
UnBook?
You
know,
to
review?"
Really,
I
just
wanted
to
be
all,
"Looky
HERE
bitches,
I
get
a
copy
before
YOU
do!
Because
Scott
LIKES
me!!!"
When,
quite
honestly,
I
believe
he
allowed
me
to
have
access
because
I'm
like
a
little
kid
who
asks
and
asks
and
asks
until
finally
he
was
like,
"FINE!
Here's
a
damn
copy
of
the
book!
QUIT
TWEETING
AT
ME!!"
Actually
he
was
quite
gracious
about
it
but
I
think
he
just
patted
me
on
the
head,
handed
me
a
lollipop
and
wanted
me
to
run
along.
Ahem.
At
any
rate,
I
DID
get
a
copy
of
the
book
and
wanted
to
share
5
things
I
learned
from
the
UnBook
with
you.
Because
if
you
own
a
business
or
want
to
start
one,
you
NEED
to
know
two
things:
first,
Scott
Stratten
is
a
creative
marketing
guru,
and
B,
that
I
will
hound
you
to
advertise
with
MOM
Magazine
because
that's
how
I
roll.
There's
so
much
more
I
could
write
about
but
this
is
Scott's
book
and
you
should
buy
it.He
tells
his
story
about
how
he
got
to
50K
+
followers,
gives
examples
of
pitches
he
has
given
to
clients
who
in
urn
rejected
them,
has
a
really
great
story
about
Rockport
Shoes,
and
has
links
to
some
of
his
own
videos
that
went
viral.
Really,
too
much
to
share
in
one
review
so
just
buy
the
book.
MOM
said
so.
