A note from Tamara Plant, founder of FIERCE
and producer of the 2011 awards

"Three weeks before the event, I was on the verge of cancelling the FIERCE Awards.

"I'm glad I didn't.

"There was something magical about that night and the event, presented by West Edmonton Mall, had an undeniable energy in the room that left people inspired, empowered and buzzing with the power of women banding together to support each other.

" MC Stacey Brotzel had the crowd laughing, the winners brought the crowd to tears with their acceptance speeches, and the event brought everyone to their feet, cheering for the FIERCE Women of the Year.

" It was a night that was talked about for days after, and an event that celebrated every single woman who was nominated.

" Congratulations to our winners and our nominees.

" THANK YOU to our sponsors who supported this event: West Edmonton Mall, Focus Communications, Kikkiplanet.com, Miss Boss & Guiding Light Financial.

" Big hugs to our swag sponsors, BMP Media & Events By Love Inc..

" A very special thank you to FIERCE Volunteers Katy Plesuk, Shaela Hoffman and Karissa Sparling.

" Last, but definitely not least, thank you to Linda Patterson of TImeless Edge Photography for being out FIERCE Photographer, and to Jaimie Clements, our FIERCE Videographer.

"I'm looking forward to next year's event and hope to build on the magic that was created Oct. 20, 2011.

2011 FIERCE Woman of the Year
Amanda Babichuk

Amanda ensures her success by ensuring the success of others around her. She became a single mother at the age of 16 but with the help of the TERRA Association (Centre for pregnant and parenting teens), she went on to not only finish school but earn her Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta. In 2008, she opened d’Lish meal assembly studio but changed the focus of d’Lish in 2010, becoming the self-proclaimed “head bitch in charge” of Edmonton’s premier wine bar & bistro. Amanda works with as many local entrepreneurs as possible, partnering with them to promote their business and selflessly helping other entrepreneurs gain notoriety and success.

Aside from her entrepreneurial commitments, she now has a teenage son in grade 10 and is also the star of her own online reality series, “Sip. Groove. Taste. Love.”

She was named the YWCA’s Entrepreneur of the Year at the Women of Distinction awards in 2009 and featured on The Avenue’s Top 40 Under 40 list.

The day after being named 2011 FIERCE Woman of the Year, Amanda's restaurant D'lish Urban Kitchen & Wine bar was named the Edmonton Chamber's Small Business of the Year.

Rising Star
Sheena Johnson

Sheena founded "Motherless Daughters of Central Alberta", as a direct result of losing her own mom when she was 15. She now mentors young girls in Central Alberta who are struggling with the loss of their mothers.

She is devoted to helping young women cope with their loss in an already overwhelming, insecure time in their lives.

She encourages these girls to focus on their futures, and make healthy, positive choices, as she knows better than anyone that life challenges can help build you into an even better person. Five years ago, Sheena opened up The Bra Lounge in Red Deer, AB. with her sister, and started a family of her own.

She is now a mom, wife and considered a leader in her community for all of her hard work and dedication. Sheena is a great role model for these girls and has big plans for the future with Motherless Daughters.

Graceful Goddess
Jody Spencer

Jody is a classy, mature, selfless, and creative woman who raises two children all the while caring for people in need throughout the community. She is a woman who does not complain about her efforts, shows up fresh and ready to go at any volunteer event, and does not expect anything in return.

Jody is the change this world needs! She empowers others by setting the example of what giving does to the soul.

She shows women how the efforts made to those less fortunate fill us up with gratitude and kindness, resulting ultimately in creating us all to be a better person. She is an inspriation because her efforts are selfless, constant, and always expanding.

Jody founded Because Edmonton Cares, a group that combines multiple volunteer events needed in the community. So far this has included Hot Chocolate for the Youth Emergency Shelter during the Whtye Ice Fesitval, recruiting people for sorting donations at Kids Kottage, and making lunch for Habit for Humanity volunteers.

Phenomenal Female
Shandra Carlson

Shandra has risen above what would've taken many of us down. Just before her son was a year old, he was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer. The stress took its toll on her marriage which slowly unravelled, and just when things were at their worst, Shandra had a seizure at work and was rushed to the hospital. Once there, they discovered a huge tumor growing behind her eye that had to be removed.

The tumour was successfuly removed but it was the breaking point for Shandra, who left her marriage and moved with her kids to a new city for a new life. She recently started a blog to inspire other women.

She is a leader in the kitchen and comes extremely recommended by anyone that has worked with her, including in the military where she received her chef training.

She is a leader among women, and humble enough to be the last person to say so. She mentors and develops the skills of anyone who is blessed to work with her, and her children are extremely centered and grounded individuals.

She is an amazing mother, sister and woman who inspires those around her. She quietly goes about her life making the lives around her shine.

Her passion for serving and empowering others, and her compassion for humanity is unparalleled and awe-inspring. She refuses to let the stereotype of depression define who she is and her tireless efforts in fundraising, volunteering and bringing awareness to mental illness is beyond impressive. Lee gives more than she should of herself, her time and her energy but she never expects anything in return.
