We try not to take life so seriously but there are certain things we are serious about and this is where you will find articles/rants/topics that matter.

TIM'S LAW: Ever since 22-year-old Tim McLean was viciously murdered on a Greyhound Bus July 30, 2008, we have kept this issue front and centre with our readers and will continue to do so until the Not Criminally Responsible law (NCR) is changed to Tim's Law.

DEPRESSION:Whether it's Post-partum or something you battle every day, we get it. We understand. MOM founder/ publisher Tamara Plant openly dicusses her battle with depression and has enabled readers to do the same.

My Darkest Days by Adriene Kelsey

NOH8: Although this campaign started in California as a response to Prop 8 banning gay marriage, it speaks to people everywhere about equality for EVERYONE and not judging ANYONE based on their sexuality. MOM is a proud supporter of NOH8. The message is perfect on every level:

Just Love. No Hate.

Bullying is NEVER OK:
by Tamara Plant

Cancer: There is no 6 Degrees of Seperation with Cancer it seems to touch EVERYONE on some level.

Blogger Sammi Love went through her own battle with breast cancer and offers up 15 ways to help someone you know who is battling this awfuldisease.

The death of NDP Leader Jack Layton Aug. 22, 2011 touched many Canadians but it was the letter he left behind that showed us how truly compassionate and humble he was.

"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world" ~ Jack Layton

We send love and light to his family and loved ones. Click here to read Jack Layton's letter to Canadians in full.

Our Sharp-Tongued MOM Vicki Pyle recently walked in the Weekend to End Cancer and her latest blog made us feel like we were right there with her

As a suicide attempt survivor who lives with depression, Calgarian, Lee Horbachewski is taking a stand to help reduce the stigma and build awareness for mental illness and suicide prevention.

To do this, she started a campaign called "Going Blue For You" in conjunction with Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 2 – 8, 2011). Lee speaks openly about her attempted suicide and battle with depression, and has written a book called "A Quite Voice: A journey through depression, anxiety and attempted suicide."

DID YOU KNOW:

Mental Illness impacts nearly 6 million Canadians (20% of the population)

About 4,000 Canadians commit suicide each year and it is the most common cause of death for people aged 15-24. Mental Illness is a factor in most suicides.

A report published by Health Canada estimated that mental health
problems cost of $14.4 billion in 1998.

Of the 10 leading causes of disability worldwide, five are mental disorders: major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, substance abuse disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder.

The Going Blue 4 U Campaign is made up of passionate individuals who are committing to dye their hair blue in support of Mental Illness Awareness Week. They will be raising funds and awareness for local charitable organizations that provide resources and support for mental illness.

Calgary AB - Distress Centre Calgary
